How to make Charcoal at Home | Coal Smoking Technique – Smoking your recipes give you an extra Tandoori flavor to your dish. In this article we will show you how to make your own Charcoal at home. If you do not have an outdoor Smoker or Tandoor at home and do not wish to buy one, but you still need a smoky flavor for your recipes, you have come to the right place for information on smoking recipes.
We all use coconuts at home. The shells of Coconut can be preserved to make Charcoal. This is the easiest way of making Charcoal at home. You may have come across the word Dhungar method. Dhungar method is a coal smoking technique, which is used to give a smoky flavor for the recipes using hot charcoal. This hot charcoal is placed in a container which in turn is placed in the pan where you have your curry or any dish which has be smoked. When the hot charcoal container is in the pan, we pour some oil over the charcoal, which releases a unique flavor and huge amount of smoke. The pan is then closed with lid and the smoke is allowed to be infused in the dish.

- Coconut Shell
- Heat Proof Container
- Heat Proof Holder
Instructions
- Take an empty Coconut Shell
- Switch on the stove flame and hold the coconut shell on flame with the help of a holder
- The coconut shell partially turns black on flame and catches fire in few places. You can reduce the flame on the stove to check if the Coconut shell has caught the fire. Once done, switch off the stove and carefully move the coconut shell to a mud container or a heat proof container
- Once the Coconut shell is transferred into a heat proof container, make sure you place the container in a safe place and let the coconut shell burn further into charcoal
- The Coconut shell catches fire and cracks open turning red and black. Once you see that the coconut shell has opened up, you can put off the fire. I usually switch on the fan and put off the fire.
- Once the fire is put off, gather the hot Charcoal in another heat proof container carefully.
- Now you have your hot charcoal ready to use for smoking recipes
